Cherokees have made the baskets in the same way for a very long while.  Traditionally they use various materials including buckbrush, honeysuckle, trumpet vine, oak and rivercane.  Some of the dyes they use are black walnut, poke berry, bloodroot and charcoal, later they discovered commercial reed and dyes and incorporated those into their baskets.
